Meet Italy at Gamescom 2024 (About)

Since 2015, and now for the 8th time, the Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association (IIDEA) has been presenting itself together with selected companies at the Italian Trade Agency’s joint stand at Gamescom in Cologne. The 21 participating companies include established studios, up-and-coming teams with growing reputations, and newcomers working on their first projects.

From 21 to 23 August 2024, in the Business Area (Hall 4.1), they will be showcasing under the joint umbrella of ‘Games in Italy’ the variety of products that the Italian video games sector has to offer – highlighting both the range of genres created and the innovative use of media.

Italian video games industry on course for growth.

With a turnover of 150 million euros in 2022 (+30% compared to 2021), the Italian video games industry is currently considered a ‘small’ player by international standards. However, despite strong international competition, it is in a sustained growth phase with considerable development opportunities. In 2022, more than 160 studios employed over 2,400 skilled workers daily, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous year. The sector is also benefiting from increasing support from the public sector, including tax breaks and funding programmes.

Exports all over the world.

The Italian video games industry is inherently export-oriented. The most important market is Europe, though its significance has recently decreased (from 60% in 2021 to 43% in 2022). Meanwhile, trade with North America has grown (from 25% in 2021 to 40% in 2022). Markets in Asia are also attracting increasing interest. Developing and distributing high-quality games that appeal to an international audience and are thus internationally competitive is a top priority.
