Gameforge- und Flaregames-Gründer Klaas Kersting geht unter die Gastronomen. In Karlsruhe eröffnet er noch in diesem Jahr sein eigenes Steak-Restaurant: Brick + Bone.

[no_toc]Von Robert de Niro erzählt man sich, er habe seinen Tribeca Grill in Lower Manhattan eröffnet, weil dort Anfang der 90er kein vernünftiges Steak-Restaurant zu finden war. Ähnlich lautet auch die Begründung von Klaas Kersting. Noch in diesem Jahr wird Kersting ein eigenes Steak-Restaurant starten – mitten in Karlsruhe.

Der Name des Lokals: Brick + Bone.

Steak is coming: Warum Klaas Kersting ein Steak-Restaurant eröffnet

„Steak is coming“ – mit dieser Facebook-Ankündigung hat der Seriengründer (Gameforge, Flaregames) und Investor (Supercell) die Branche überrascht. Der Slogan ist freilich eine Anspielung auf „Winter is coming“, dem Motto der Game of Thrones-Dynastie Stark.

Im GamesWirtschaft-Interview erzählt Kersting, was hinter dem Projekt steckt.

GamesWirtschaft: Zunächst Glückwunsch zu Brick + Bone. Wir hatten bislang nicht den Eindruck, dass du unterbeschäftigt wärst. Wie kommt man auf so eine Idee? Und was bringst du selbst in die Unternehmung ein?

Kersting: Dankeschön! Karlsruhe ist eine wunderbare Stadt und ich fühle mich hier sehr wohl. Was mir aber immer fehlte, war eine Möglichkeit, so richtig gutes Steak zu essen. Mit dem Gedanken, das selbst zu lösen, indem ich ein Steakhouse aufmache, habe ich immer schon ein bisschen geliebäugelt – anfangs mehr als Witz. Als ich dann jemanden kennengelernt habe, der das tatsächlich schon mehrmals gemacht hatte, wurde es konkreter. Und nachdem wir dann eine tolle Location gefunden haben, haben wir einfach mit der Umsetzung losgelegt.

GamesWirtschaft: Eine schnelle Tripadvisor-Recherche ergibt: In und um Karlsruhe gibt es Dutzende von Restaurants, die Steaks auftischen. Was wird Brick + Bone unterscheiden?

Kersting: Natürlich gibt es in Karlsruhe Restaurants, die Fleisch servieren. Was mir in Karlsruhe und Umgebung fehlt, ist ein Restaurant, das eben das ‚richtige‘ Fleisch bezieht, dieses richtig behandelt und zelebriert – ein echtes hochklassiges Steakhouse eben.

GamesWirtschaft: Was werden konkrete Einträge auf der Speise- und Getränkekarte sein, die auf deinen Input zurückgehen?

Kersting: Ich habe zusammen mit meinem Partner die Speisekarte gebaut – mir war es wichtig, dass wir wirklich grossartiges Steak und richtig gute Weine dazu servieren. Bei der konkreten Umsetzung in Gerichte für die Karten verlasse ich mich aber selbstverständlich auf die Erfahrung meines Partners.

Klaas Kersting: Momentan denke ich nicht über das erste Restaurant hinaus

GamesWirtschaft: Welche Rolle wirst du in diesem Fall einnehmen? Wirst du auch selbst hinter dem Grill stehen oder Wein dekantieren?

Kersting: Ich werde regelmäßig Steak essen und Wein trinken – und mich sowohl darüber freuen als auch über die Erweiterung des gastronomischen Angebotes in Karlsruhe, das ich mit treiben durfte. Um operativ etwas beitragen zu können, verstehe ich – trotz mehreren Jahren kellnern – einfach nicht genug von der Materie.

GamesWirtschaft: Üblicherweise investierst du ja in Geschäftsmodelle, die sich skalieren lassen. Soll Brick + Bone ein Unikat bleiben oder in Serie gehen?

Kersting: Ich sehe Brick + Bone nicht als Geschäftsmodell, sondern als etwas, was mir am Herzen liegt. Momentan denke ich nicht über das erste Restaurant hinaus. Wenn es allerdings gut läuft – wer weiß…

GamesWirtschaft: An welchen Projekten und Unternehmungen außerhalb der Gamesbranche bist du denn noch beteiligt (mental und/oder finanziell)?

Kersting: Nach wie vor gilt meine grosse berufliche Leidenschaft der Gamesbranche. Davon verstehe ich am meisten, deshalb sind eben auch fast alle meine Investments und Projekte im Games-Umfeld.

GamesWirtschaft: Abschließend: Flaregames. Welchem Thema oder Projekt widmest du hier derzeit deine größte Aufmerksamkeit?

Kersting: Flaregames ist meine Leidenschaft, mein Job und mein Fokus. Ich tue dort genau das, was ich machen möchte, auf exakt die Art, wie ich es machen möchte – zeitlich deutlich mehr als ein Vollzeitjob. Und das wird sich auch so bald nicht ändern.

Steak is coming: The reason Flaregames-CEO Klaas Kersting opening his own Steak restaurant

GamesWirtschaft: First of all – congratulations and good luck with Brick + Bone. We haven’t been aware that you are suffering from too much free time. How did the idea of opening your own restaurant came across? And what is it you bring in by yourself?

Kersting: Thanks! Karlsruhe is a wonderful city and I really enjoy living here. What’s been missing is a place to eat a real great Steak. I had an eye on the idea to change that by opening my own Steak restaurant. In the beginning, it was kind of a joke. When I met someone who did something like that several times before it became more realistic. When we finally found a great location in Karlsruhe we decided to get started.

GamesWirtschaft: Having a quick look at Tripadvisor shows that there are dozens of restaurants in Karlsruhe serving Steaks. What’s the difference Brick + Bone will make?

Kersting: For sure there are restaurants in Karlsruhe serving meat. What’s missing in Karlsruhe and neighborhood is a restaurant that gets delivered with the ‚right‘ meat, that treats it right and makes all dishes an event. In short: a real highclass Steakhouse.

GamesWirtschaft: What are entries on the menu and wine card which are based on your input?

Kersting: I built the menu together with my partner. It was important for me that we are serving real great Steak accompanied by top-notch wine. When it comes to individual dishes for the menu I rely heavily on the experience of my partners.

Klaas Kersting: At the moment I don’t think beyond the first restaurant.

GamesWirtschaft: What’s your role as soon Brick + Bone opens? Will you make an appearance at the grill station or decant some wine?

Kersting: I will enjoy eating Steak and drinking wine on a regular basis. That’s what I’m really looking forward to. Plus I’m happy to extend the choice of food you have in Karlsruhe and that I’m able to contribute on that. When it comes to actual contributing something in day-to-day-business I’m no expert in that – despite having worked waiting tables for several years.

GamesWirtschaft: Generally you’re investing in business cases which are able to scale. Will Brick + Bone be one of its kind or are you planning to open additional restaurants?

Kersting: I don’t see Brick + Bone as a business case. Instead it’s something I do with heart and soul. At the moment I don’t think beyond the first restaurant. But if it works fine … who knows.

GamesWirtschaft: Are there any other projects and companies outside the games industry you are taking part?

Kersting: The games industry is my passion. It’s the business I know the most about. So nearly all my investments and projects are linked directly to games.

GamesWirtschaft: Finally: Flaregames. What’s the topic that desires the most of your time and attention at the moment?

Kersting: Flaregames is my passion, my job and the thing I’m totally focused on. I’m doing the things I love – and the exact way I want them to do. Speaking of time spent at Flaregames it’s clearly more than a fulltime-job. And that’s a thing that won’t change for quite a while.
